My mom, Sandy Gifford (pictured) and I just returned from a beautiful afternoon of walking, shopping and a wonderful lunch outside along the water at National Harbor, Md. After lunch we peeked inside the Gaylord Resort. What an amazing place! We’re looking forward to returning with the rest of the family. They have some great upcoming events around the holidays. Maybe even take the water taxi from Old Town Alexandria to the NationalÂ Harbor. This was a perfect afternoon getaway. I had no idea this was so close! Thanks.

Attached please find a picture to submit for the free weekend get-away contest. I am pictured in the attached, Justine Handelman. I had a girls’ getaway weekend to Ocean Grove, N.J., which was featured in your magazine. It was a lovely, relaxing weekend on the beach (particularly since there were no kids to chase around for a change), nice strolls through town and around the Great Auditorium and Tent City, with plenty of stops at Saturday yard sales which were abundant across town. We also dined in Asbury Park (a short walk from OG) one night and were impressed with the array of restaurants in the downtown area. I enjoyed your article on mid-Atlantic Travel Destinations. Here is a picture of my visit to Ocean Grove, N.J., in front of the 108-year-old century old fishing pier. This historical and traditionally Victorian town is best seen on foot. It has a beautiful open air boardwalk unspoiled by shops and stands so often found along most east coast beaches. I walked leisurely among ‘tent city’ beautifully decorated, past the Great Auditorium built in 1984, down Ocean Pathway with its ‘magnificent seven’ Victorian homes, along the boardwalk and up Main street to enjoy the quaint friendly town. Virginia Beach (6th Street & Atlantic Ave)

After reading the Summer 2008 edition of Trips and Getaways, we decided to take a long weekend trip to Virginia Beach. It has turned out to be the highlight of our summer. With some enthusiastic encouragement from our son, we managed to climb to the top of the Cape Henry Lighthouse; spent a gloriously sunny day at the beach frolicking in the waves; rode the entire length of boardwalk on a family bicycle; went souvenir shopping in our bathing suits and danced to the free music concerts on the streets. Our son even became comfortable enough in the water to learn how to swim at the hotel pool. We came home a bit exhausted, but with a smile on our faces and many happy memories of our impromptu family vacation. The best part was that it was all less than a four hour drive away from home. We’ll definitely be going back to Virginia Beach next summer.

Thank you so much for your article on Hershey Park, PA. What a great idea! We were looking for a place to take the kids that wasn’t too far away that they would enjoy for a mini-vacation. We all had so much fun there. We explored the whole area in and around Hershey. So beautiful, so different, and closer than we thought! Got any ideas for a kid-friendly fall getaway?

Thank you for the great article on the Bavarian Inn. Today we were treated to lunch at the Inn by our special friends, Evelyn and Arnold Brown. We enjoyed the food, service, and view. Since it is a short trip from our home in Martinsburg, we plan on going again soon.

Thank you for your interesting and uplifting magazine on Trips & Getaways! I had a wonderful trip to the Brookside Gardens as a special guest and treat from my dear friend for my birthday. I was thrilled to see the “Wings of Fancy butterfly Exhibit” and all the flowers in blooms. I found the garden very tranquil and refreshing! I am looking forward to taking other trips in the future as well.

We recently went to a wedding in New Jersey and traveled in our RV through the Lancaster, Pa., area. We took Trips & Getaways along as we traveled through Amish country. Your magazine is great for us RV’ers! This picture was taken as we were returning home at Crystal Caves in Kutztown, Pa.
