Looking for a place to take the family on a winter getaway? While the first snowfall beckons those who enjoy skiing, tubing or snowboarding as loudly as the call of the wild, some would rather exchange their parkas for swimsuits and ride a water slide instead of the slopes. No matter what your taste is for wintertime fun, bring the whole family because there is something for everyone at the four-season Massanutten Resort in Harrisonburg, Va.
For more than 30 years, Massanutten has welcomed vacationers as they experience the beautiful Shenandoah Valley. From Massanutten Peak, you can gaze out over panoramic views of the Blue Ridge Mountains and surrounding valley. If you enjoy skiing, golfing, swimming, hiking or just relaxing in the spa, Massanutten Resort is the perfect place for a family vacation.
For the winter sports enthusiasts, Massanutten has seven lifts, 1,110 feet of vertical drop and two terrain parks, as well as the Peaked MountainExpress Tube Park with its 900-foot-long hill. It has 14 ski trails, which are also lit for night skiing. The two terrain parks, the CMB and Easy Street, have their own lifts. While Easy Street uses smaller features that cater to the learning curve of beginners, the CMB is open to snowboards, snowblades and skis.
All skill levels are welcome. Don’t know how to ski or snowboard? Lessons are available through the Snow Sport Learning Center, with qualified instructors, who are members of the Professional Ski Instructors of America and the American Association of Snowboard Instructors. Private lessons are available as well as group lessons. The resort also offers lessons and winter sport opportunities for physically challenged individuals.
For children interested in learning winter sports, the resort offers skiing lessons for kids as young as 4 years old and snowboarding for ages 7 and up. Children of all ages (and adults!) love to slide down the hill at the tube park. Watch out for flying tubes! If you’re standing too close, you might need to jump out of the way, but there’s really nothing to worry about, there’s plenty of safety netting and buffering for adventurous tubers.
Want to shed the coats and scarves? Visit the indoor 42,000-square-foot water park with its eight indoor water slides, a kiddie area called Frog Pond for the little ones, body slides with over 250 feet of heart-pumping drops and turns, and the Pipeline, the first and largest Flowrider for indoor surfing. The Flowrider has become so popular that Massanutten sponsors its own team in national competitions. Stop by most days at the waterpark and the Flow Crew will dazzle you with their 15-minute routines that includes stand up, drop knee and body board tricks like tilt-a-whirl, pizza dough and tantrum.
Family members who don’t want to be cold can watch from the warmth of the ski lodge as their family slides down the snow-packed hills, or they can join the youngsters in the indoor water park and watch them surf the Flowrider.
When you’ve had enough of the wet water or cold snow, relax in the spa either by yourself or sign up for a couples’ massage or a foot reflexology class. Or sign up for one of the more than 100 classes that are offered Monday through Friday. Everything from making stained glass or soap to stress reduction and relaxation workshops to Tae Box aerobics to attending cooking demonstrations, wine tasting and even a mystery dinner theater.
There are two 18-hole golf courses, but only Woodstone Meadows is open year round. The 18- hole, par 65 course is a diverse golf course that caters to novice golfers while at the same time offering ample challenges for expert swingers.
Dining options include preparing your own meals if you’re in a condo or, for both condo renters and hotel residents, enjoying a five-course menu prepared by the Chef at the Fareways Restaurant, which bills itself as “creative dining in a casual setting.”
