Do you have a taste for wine or beer? How about silver and agriculture? A visit to the capital of the First State will certainly whet your appetite for more.

Pizzadili Vineyard and Winery

Pete Pizzadili tells people he “grew up inside a barrel” in Italy years ago when his parents owned a vineyard in Florence. When they settled in Dover in 1956, the family started a deli and catering business.  After vowing for years to stay out of the winemaking business, Pete and his brother opened the vineyard in 1996. “I should have listened to my father all along,” says Pizzadili with a grin.

Today, Pizzadili Vineyard and Winery in Felton, Del., set on over 100 beautiful acres, offers year-round catering events and produces nine kinds of wine. Visitors often stop by to take photos of the 17 acres of luscious grapes hanging on vines throughout the vineyard and to tour the winemaking process in the early fall. From spring to fall, a pond and beautiful landscape provide the perfect venue for outdoor weddings, picnics or parties. There is an inside banquet room for weddings and year-round events.

Pizzadili is proud to say that every drop of wine produced in this vineyard stays in Delaware, and he serves only wine produced in his vineyard. Pizzadili Vineyard and Winery is located at 1683 Peach Basket Road in Felton, Del. For information on weddings, catering events or tours, call 302-284-9463.

Delaware Agricultural Museum and Village

Be sure to take your children to the Delaware Agricultural Museum and Village, just across the highway from Dover Downs Casino & Resort. As you tour the rooms with more than 10,000 artifacts on display and the re-created 1890s village, you will rekindle memories of your own childhood and the children will learn about the quickly fading agricultural heritage of Delaware and the Delmarva Peninsula.

Start the tour in the Main Exhibit Hall by exploring the technological advances made by Delawareans and the industries they founded, made flourish, and in some cases, lost. A main exhibit building and 15 historic structures associated with a 19th-century farming community bring the fascinating story of agriculture to life. More than 4,000 artifacts are displayed in the main exhibit building — from butter churns to threshers, from an 18th century log house to the first broiler chicken house.

Move outside to Loockerman Landing Village. This representation of a rural village in the 1890s allows the visitor to wander through a community frozen in time. Visit the store, whose proprietor has just stepped out; the farmhouse with the table set for the evening meal; the schoolhouse, where lessons have been interrupted for the day ... perhaps by a special meeting at the church? Walk through the life of a Delaware farmer on the cusp of a new century. Stop by the museum store on your way out.

The Delaware Agricultural Museum and Village is located at 866 N. DuPont Highway in Dover. Hours are Tuesday through Saturday, 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. and Sundays from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. Admission is $5 for adults and $3 for students and seniors. Children under 6 are free. The museum offers special event admission as well as group and family rates. For information, visit www.agriculturalmuseum.org or call 302-734-1618.
